Members Absent: April Castillo and Ben Sublasky
1. Balance of Available Tax Expenditures as of October 1, 2009
The balance of available tax expenditures as of today is $5,703.19.
2. Current Canyon Ridge Tax Expenditure Applications
The first request is from James Morey and the Student Celebrations Committee for $300 to host two breakfast assemblies to recognize students for their character. Mr. West indicated that last year the students really enjoyed this aspect of the Character Counts program and it’s a really nice way to honor students. Motion passed unanimously by all present to approve this request.
The second request is from Kelly Greene for funds for a Cougar mascot for the school in the amount of $1,300. It will have multiple uses – honor roll, pep assemblies, to travel with the cheer squad for games, etc., and it really promotes school spirit. Mr. Raso said that he did some research on prices and although there were other cheaper mascots, the quality was not as good. Because the suggested vendor might not be a district vendor, it was suggested that a certain dollar amount be approved and a district approved vendor be used based on our criteria. There was also discussion on the possibility of additional fundraising by school groups to assist in the payment. After discussion by the group, the request for $1,300 for the mascot pending approval of vendor was unanimously approved by all members present.
3. Canyon Ridge Barnes and Noble Night/Fundraising Opportunity
Barnes and Noble night for Canyon Ridge is November 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. We will have a table and have tax credit forms available at this event. If anyone on site council is available to attend, please let Mr. Raso know. Mr. Raso also said that this year children’s games will not be available through Barnes and Noble, but as long as teachers are there to run games, they will be still able to do this again this year.
4. Availability of Bond Override Information From the District
Mr. West reminded us that the bond override elections are coming up the first part of November and that we could discuss the facts of the override election with those we encounter. Also, the City of Surprise is sending ballots to residents on a bond election which is not part of the general election. The Dysart overrides are part of the general election and voters will need to cast ballots at a polling location or have requested a general election ballot through the mail. This does not include Dysart’s bond override and if we can let people know that these issues are separate and still need to be voted on, so that the school override issues are not negatively impacted.
5. Call to the Public for Questions and Comments
Mr. Raso indicated that some of our Tuesday meetings fall on DEA meetings. Our options are to change some of the meetings so they do not conflict with the DEA meetings or to alternate the meetings and work this so that the teachers have access to both meetings. The teachers present opted to leave the meeting schedule as it is and will alternate appearances between Site Council and DEA meetings.
With all business concluded, the Canyon Ridge Site Council adjourned after 22 minutes of work and discussion. Our next meeting is scheduled for November 10, 2009 at 4 pm in the conference room.
