November, 2009

West Point Parents and Community,

I am please to announce that West Point has been labeled a Performing Plus school by the state, along with making AYP for the 2008-2009 school year.  This is an upward movement in our overall ranking from the prior school year. My goal for the 2009-2010 school year is attain a highly performing excelling label by the end of the school year. In addition we have received  NCA accreditation for our school improvement process. We are excited about our continued success, but we need to strive for the next educational level for all of our students. My vision for our school is to become a community of learners, where every child can communicate, demonstrate and focus their individual learning. The first step in this process has been the posting and discussion of “I Can” statements inside every classroom on a daily basis. The “I Can” statements are the AZ state educational standards written in a kid friendly format, that leads to educational focused discussions on the campus and at home. Please ask your child daily about the “I Can” statements for their grade level. During the month of November, every classroom teacher has completed the process of analyzing individual student data for reading, writing and math. Both teachers and students will be creating individual goals for their success, so that every discussion on our campus is focused on student learning and one year growth. We are also in the development stage of student portfolios for all students, along with a STEM project for grade 6th-8th.Wrapped around all of those ideas, is the continued focus of adaptive technology in daily classroom instruction. All of these ideas and more will be presented to the community in our mid-year curriculum night that will be held after the Winter Break. Thank you for all of your continued support in making our school a wonderful place to learn, lead and grow.

Thank you,

Christopher Kieffer
