Dysart Elementary is committed to providing a premier education to every child. This commitment is hindered when students are tardy to class or absent from school. Important instructional minutes are lost when students are not in the room ready to learn. There are many studies which show that attendance rates are directly related to student achievement. Attendance is the first step in helping your child meet or exceed state standards and to performing well on the AIMS test this spring. Getting to class on time and being prepared to learn is equally important. Students sometimes feel embarrassed when they are late, and the disruption to the remainder of the class is unnecessary. We ask that you ensure your children arrive to school on time, and ready to learn, each day.
School begins promptly at 8:15am. Students should arrive to school no later than 20 minutes prior to school start time if your child will eat breakfast at school or 10 minutes before school starts if they will not eat breakfast at school. When a tardy cannot be avoided, parents must bring their child to the school, signing them in at the front office. If the parent does not sign the child in, the tardy will be unexcused. If there begins to be a pattern of unexcused tardies, the following may occur (per the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook, pages 5 & 23):
- 1st unexcused tardy - Letter sent home to parent/guardian
- 2nd unexcused tardy - Telephone call home from the homeroom teacher
- 3rd and subsequent unexcused tardies will result in a lunch detention (for grades K-3) or after school detention from 3:15p – 4:15p (for 4th – 8th grade students)
This procedure will begin Monday, January 14, 2008. Should you have any questions or if we can provide you with assistance in reducing tardies, please contact us at your convenience.
